This procedure addresses the process by which frozen plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate are selected for patient use through SafeTrace Tx.
1. Product Selection – Single Bag Platelet Pheresis, FFP, CRYO:
A. In the Patient/Order module, go to PW (Toolbar) to open the “Pending Worklog”. No specimen is needed so the order goes directly to the PW.
B. Click on the Red Question Mark (Query) to bring up all pending work.
C. Choose the item row with the appropriate product (FFP, PLT or CRYO).
D. Click on PS (Toolbar) to open the “Product Selection” window:
E. Bar code the Product code and unit # from the unit label. SafeTrace Tx uses these two criteria to find the unit in Inventory and populate the other fields. (No other criteria are accepted by SafeTrace Tx for use in its search of the Inventory.)
F. If necessary, manually enter the unit information by clicking the [Manual] button and typing in the data on the “Manual Component Entry” window.
a. All items are case sensitive in the manual entry mode.
b. DO NOT use the Caps Lock button.
c. The small character in the box to the far right of the Unit ID number is called the CheckSum digit.
This item must be included in the manual entry of the Unit ID number (do not include the two zeros).
G. Click on Accept.
H. When all products have been selected, click OK.
I. The Product ID Tag(s) and the Product ID Label(s) automatically print.
J. Rubber-band the Product ID Tag(s) to the component(s).
K. Attach the Product ID Label to the component bag.
L. The product(s) is now available for issue.
2. Product Selection; Double Bag Platelet Pheresis:
A. This product must be pooled before product selection. However, it is not considered a modification, so the outdate must be changed manually.
B. In the Inventory module, go to File Open; Component.
C. Barcode or Manually enter the Pheresis information; click [Query].
D. The “Component Profile” window opens:
E. Go to Components (Menu Bar); Override:
F. The Component Override window opens.
G. Change the expiration date to 4 hours from the time the second bag is pooled into the main bag.
H. Add a comment stating “Pooled Double Pheresis”:
I. Click OK. The expiration date has now been changed to reflect the loss of oxygenation of the product.
J. Using a waterproof marker, put a line through the original expiration date and write the new expiration date and time on the label.
Warning: Pool this product immediately before product selection and issue. If the double-bag pheresis platelet has not been pooled and the order to issue is cancelled, go back to Component Override and reenter the original outdate.
